What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of making improvement on- and off- your website in order to gain more exposures in Search Engine results. And more exposures from search engines results, will ultimately lead to people finding your website for the right reasons. In order to understand what improvement will affect search engine results, let's take a step back on the goal of search engines themselves.
At the heart of it all search engines are trying to understand all content out there on the internet and then quickly deliver relevance and authoritative results based on any phrase the users might be searching for.

 First Lets talk about Relevance:

When a user searches for something like “New York Hotel”, search engines would return topics related to “New York Hotel”. Search engines would analyze all pages they ever visited and pick out the pages that they believe that are most relevant to “New York Hotel”. They determine this by evaluating different criteria and how your content is written and implemented in code, as well as other websites on the internet, are linking to you. And all of this is stored in a very big, complex and propriety algorithm. At the end of the day and in the fraction of a seconds, the search engines are then able to rank and display all of those pages in order of relevance to that phrase that the users just typed in "New York Hotel".

This is very important to understand because search engines make clear distinctions in content about New York Hotel and content such as New York Tour. Search engines are able to understand quite a bit about semantic and thematic connections between words and concepts. Take Another Example "Cow Feeds", the search engines know that pages selling cow feeds are greatly relevant to that search query. But it's also knowing that pages such as livestock feeds and Animal feeds are of relevance.

The Second Factors that affect search engine exposure is Authority

In other words, out there in a largely lawless world wide web where anyone can post anything. Ask yourself these question “Is your website a trusted place on the internet?” Can the Search engines show it to their users? One way the search engines shows it users the authority of a website or a domain is by evaluating what other website think of you. And this can be measured by the links from another website pointing to your site.

You can think of a link as a vote on the internet. For example, a web page linking to your website, is almost like saying Hay' I trust your content enough that is willing to reference your page and possibly even send traffic to your site. It's a vote of trust and search engines pick-up on this, because they crawl the internet reading, assessing and putting in all the data they can find on all the pages on the internet.
But it's important to know right from the start that this is not just a popularity contest when you try to accumulate the most votes on the internet or net. But you need to know that search engines have safety measures in place to prevent this kind of abuse and instead place emphasis on the quality of the links.
For example, a search engine is more likely to trust a link if it comes from a well respected or sites related to the industry. such as blogs, nonprofit organization or government organization in the same industry that is involved in your field of work. A link coming from a 1 month old site that has nothing to do with you or your industry, write above the text that says write above anything you want for $10 or $20 is not going to be valued nearly as much.
From the search engine perspective some links are more effective than the others casting their vote to your website and determining your site authority. You might think of the whole system the way to democracy, where some vote worth more than others.
